Pat Martino (born Patrick Carmen Azzara; August 25, 1944 \u2013 November 1, 2021) was an American jazz guitarist and composer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Martino was born Patrick Carmen Azzara in\u00a0Philadelphia,\u00a0Pennsylvania, United States, to father Carmen “Mickey” Azzara (d. 1990) and mother Jean (n\u00e9e Orlando, d. 1989).[1]\u00a0He was first exposed to jazz by his father, who sang in local clubs and briefly studied guitar.[3]\u00a0Pat studied with renowned jazz teacher\u00a0Dennis Sandole, and in his studio met other of Sandole’s students; among them,\u00a0John Coltrane,\u00a0James Moody,\u00a0McCoy Tyner\u00a0and others. Martino began playing professionally at the age of 15 after moving to New York City. He lived for a period with\u00a0Les Paul\u00a0and began playing at jazz clubs such as\u00a0Smalls Paradise. He later moved into a suite in the President Hotel on\u00a048th Street. He played at Smalls for six months of the year, and played summers at the\u00a0Club Harlem\u00a0in\u00a0Atlantic City, New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n
