Leonard Joseph Tristano\u00a0(March 19, 1919 \u2013 November 18, 1978) was an American\u00a0jazz\u00a0pianist, composer, arranger, and teacher of jazz improvisation.<\/p>\n
Tristano studied for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music in Chicago before moving to New York City in 1946. He played with leading\u00a0bebop\u00a0musicians and formed his own small bands, which soon displayed some of his early interests \u2013\u00a0contrapuntal\u00a0interaction of instruments, harmonic flexibility, and rhythmic complexity. His quintet in 1949 recorded the first\u00a0free\u00a0group improvisations. Tristano’s innovations continued in 1951, with the first\u00a0overdubbed, improvised jazz recordings, and two years later, when he recorded an\u00a0atonal\u00a0improvised solo piano piece that was based on the development of motifs rather than on harmonies. He developed further via\u00a0polyrhythms\u00a0and\u00a0chromaticism\u00a0into the 1960s, but was infrequently recorded.<\/p>\n
